Create solutions for Alabama students

Instruction: 30% of Birmingham City Schools graduates are not ready for college (Source: Jefferson Reporter).

Mental health: Approximately 10% of Alabama K-12 students experienced major depressive episodes in the past year and were not treated (Source: Hopeful Futures Campaign).

Transportation: Almost 1/4 of BCS students are chronically absent—missing 15+ days of school in one year (Source: ASDOE).

When asked, parents report that lack of safe transporation is a leading cause of absenteeism.

How might we…

Food systems: 1 in 5 children in central Alabama faces food insecurity, seriously impeding their ability to learn (Source: Community Food Bank of Central Alabama).

Workforce: This year, there are 3,000 vacant teaching positions in Alabama (Source: Yellowhammer Times), and more than 50% of new teachers will leave the profession within 3 years (Source: Alabama Daily News).
